In May 2016, a high-level international waste dump was recommended for South Australia by the Nuclear Royal Commission, following the South Australian Government announcing a Royal Commission into Nuclear Fuel Cycle in February 2015.
We know that a high-level international radioactive waste dump is just not worth the risk, nor is it the right path for our state. In the face of significant political and media pressure, Conservation SA has been leading the fight against it.
We have commissioned a series of expert critiques of the overblown economics of the proposal (funded by a generous donor) and as a result, the potential profits from a dump are now being openly questioned.
We have helped slow the push for nuclear power by producing a highly influential analysis that demonstrated that 100% renewable energy was credible and affordable for South Australia.
Our state already leads the nation in renewable energy and we believe our future is renewable, not radioactive.
South Australians have a long history of opposing waste dumps and have state legislation opposing it. Conservation SA is working hard to have a voice in the debate and represent many South Australians who don't want us to go down the nuclear path.

Three sites short-listed for nuclear waste dump in SA
The Federal Government has announced three sites in SA have been short-listed for a nuclear waste dump. The sites are Cortlinye and Pinkawillinie near Kimba on the Eyre Peninsula, and Barndioota near Hawker, north of Port Augusta. Anyone with a right or interest in the nominated land (any of the proposed waste dump sites), including people from local communities near the sites, was invited to comment on the proposal.
