Act now: No place for nuclear waste

South Australia is a special place with strong and unique communities and breathtaking landscapes.

We have a long and proud history of saying no to nuclear waste - with legislation to back it up and make it illegal to establish a nuclear dump here.

Our state is simply 'too good to waste.'

Right now the Federal Government is pushing forward with a deeply contested plan to establish a nuclear waste facility on the Eyre Peninsula.

Legislation is before the Senate right now that names this region as the national dump and store site and removes the rights of judicial review for Traditional Owners and others in the community opposed to the current plan.

We urgently need to get our state Senate representatives to vote against this heavy-handed and unnecessary legislation.

Dear Senator,

I am writing to urge you to vote against the National Radioactive Waste Management Amendment (Site Specification, Community Fund and Other Measures) Bill 2020.

This Bill would remove the ability for members of the community who would be affected by the proposed site for a nuclear waste facility at Napandee to have the Minister’s decision reviewed in Court, so that there can be independent oversight to see if the Government has followed their processes properly under the existing National Radioactive Waste Management legislation.

Using federal legislation to deliberately remove community access to judicial review is unfair, unreasonable and unnecessary.

This legislation, which seeks to directly legislate the site of the nuclear waste facility, is out of step with long-standing state legislation that prohibits non-SA nuclear waste facilities and further disenfranchises the wider South Australian community, who have had no say in this plan.  More importantly, the new legislation is an excuse for the Government to abandon the existing legislation, which it had made a commitment to and had based their site selection process on for the facility.

The Federal Government’s nuclear waste plan is also not consistent with international best practice, the positions of SA Labor, the Greens or Centre Alliance, or widespread community opinion.

This legislation silences the voices of South Australians and explicitly removes the rights of citizens to seek judicial oversight on an issue with long term impacts and risks.

Your vote is crucial. I urge you to support legal rights and protections and democratic decision making and vote against the Bill.
